Has anyone done this running event? I was invited to be a "leg" in this race in 2 weeks!!! Soooo undertrained, I'm a 10-11 minute miler and haven't ran more than a 5K at one given time. So what do you guys think, is it really competitive or more fun? If I stop and walk will I be booed? How do they work out things like bathroom breaks etc...if anyone is going to be in it or has been in it, please let me know I have to decide very soon!
I think it's more of a fun event for most of the participants. I've never done it but know a few people who have, so I'm pretty much an expert. With that said, if you stop, I'd boo, for sure. But that's only because I'd be bitter I was standing on the sidelines wishing I was thin enough to run for more than 47 seconds at a time. I have no idea how bathroom breaks work, so I'd assume you make your own rules. Good luck!
Agreed. There most definitely will be teams with runners running the whole race, and fast; but as with most endurance events, I bet that casual participants are welcome, and encouraged.
PS: I'd like to participate in this, but I know of no one who'd like to run for that long... even less 11 of them :P If someone needs another casual runner, I'm interested :)
My sister will be doing this event this year. From what I know, each leg is ~5-6 miles and you have to run about four legs. If you can handle that, then I think you're good to go!
Hello! Anyone looking to for an RTO team to run with? My team is short a runner. You would be on Leg #8 by default - but we can shuffle the line-up around to suit if necessary. For more on Reno Tahoe Odyssey: http://stin.gy/5
Hey Nico! I'm average on a good day. I'll hook you up with our team. It's a fun band of misfits. Our van is the Venitian Skunk. Gonna be a blast! I'll get you in touch with the rest of the crew.
I've done it before, and would do it again this year except that I'm in a wedding that weekend. Since you've already run 5k's you'll be in ok shape to compete.. .depending on which legs you run. Each one of our 12 runners runs 3 times... averaging 12 miles total. We do it for fun, but there are teams that are very serious... there's also teams that run it in diapers (so hopefully you'll fall somewhere in the middle). You won't be booed for walking. And as for bathrooms, you're taken care of at each of the hand off spots... they bring in at least 2 "Johnny on the Spots."
I know others have chimed in, but just want to confirm that the Odyssey is a great event. I missed the first one, but have run the past two years and even ran with the Sierra Tap team at the Arizona Odyssey last October. Though the race is marked by running, it has little to do with running. It's about team spirit, fun times and overcoming challenges. We always have a blast participating in this event. Sure, I've been on two winning teams, but we hardly ran fast...just entered in easy divisions.
If you know of anyone looking to join a fun team, I'm looking for a couple people. They just need to want to have fun and run a few miles. My team's called Suds 'n Roadkill.
I wasn't able to make it unfortunetly but I will next year for sure! I ended up meeting a lot of people that did it and I wished I could have been there this year. Thanks for the feed back!
