Anyone remember Mackay's (sp?) - now Bertha Miranda's on Mill Street. They used to serve honest-to-goddess Caeser salads with RAW eggs in the dressing and whole anchovies on top. Now all you can get is plain lettuce slathered in dreck.
Anyone know of place you can still get a real Caeser salad and risk samonella in the process?
I risk serious backlash for this, but I'm willing to take the chance. The ONLY one I've had while living here was made at the Gold Hill Hotel in, well, Gold Hill. It was awesome. I don't eat out enough/spend enough on meals to go to places where they might actually make a Caesar for you. So someone please point a few places out.
The Steakhouse at Harrahs makes a terrific Caesar Salad. Mashed up anchovies, enough garlic to keep the vampires away, real lemon, a dash of Worchester, coddled eggs (yep, coddled), tasty croutons, and a bit of Dijon mustard. All made in a wooden bowl as old as dirt. Dining Room Captain, Ozzie Cabrera whips it up tableside. Put me in the horseshoe booth with a Manhattan and my life is good.
i'll second that. harrah's steak house makes a fantastic REAL caesar salad. they will even give you the recipe if you ask. they also make a proper martini. also, for the record, they didn't coddle the eggs when we had our salad, but this was a few years back. they cracked the eggs right into the bowl, just like they are supposed to.
Move to approve. I had a client in town last year and we went to Harrah's for dinner and shared the Ceasar. That was one good salad. Be warned though, my wife almost kicked me out of bed I smelled so bad from the Garlic. One of my colleagues that night had the same experience when she got home. We laugh about it often.
You are correct, they were cracked right into the bowl. One of my dining companions just pointed that out to me. Oooops, I guess I'm going to lose that Julia Child Award....Anyhoos, it is a GREAT salad and you are spot-in about the Martinis. I really enjoy the Steakhouse every visit.
Harrah's...ahhh! That is one tasty salad. Tom Clark, we need to revisit that fine establishment one of these days, but let's take the spouses so we can all enjoy.
I don't know how authentic it is, but the best caesar in town that I know of is at the Grill at Quail Corners (on McCarran between Virginia and Lakeside). Get it with the blackened salmon. They brew their own iced tea, too.
They keep changing head chefs though, so let's hope they keep the quality up!
