My Neighborhood

What part of town do you live in, and why do you like it?

OK I'll admit that I started this discussion so I can boast about living in the best neighborhood in town. I'm in the old southwest just about 3 blks S of California Ave -- not "Cal Ave" please:)

I moved here in '94. Most of my neighbors on the block have been here much longer than that. They are really great people. A few weeks ago they re-paved our street (for the first time since, I think, horse and buggy days). To celebrate we're having a block party the last weekend in July.

What I love about this neighborhood is how walkable it is. I can walk to the movie theater and Wingfield. I can walk to restaurants that run the range from Michael's Deli to Sezmu. And there are more of those every year. And now the West St market is coming (I'm not forgetting the farmer's market on California). When I moved here years ago I hoped that this area was on its way up -- and it is!

I'm moving back to Sparks! AHHH WHAT UP NOW?! SPARKS BABY? I have lived here my whole life and it used to be that Reno and Sparks were 1...am I kicked off now? I'm not as rich as the "Plumas Arlington" folks. Damn...I'm not in the click (sob)

Yup, you're banned. For that and the Mariners hat I saw on you in a picture.

What Wolfy didn't say is that he lives on Arlington, but not in a house. He has a nice pile of soft biomass behind an old guy's wood pile. He's tight with the raccoons over there, too.

ha ha ha! I'm actually in the NW till September so at least I can stay on for a while! Oh the Mariners hat...o.k. that so doesn't count. It WAS A GIFT...think of it this way. I care about it so much I wore it out to get all muddy at the river fest! How is that?

Okay! So nobody gets it. I said "best neighborhood" and you took me seriously?!

Reno (and Sparks and Carson and Gardnerville and unincorporated areas etc etc) is full of great neighborhoods. I've met people who live at the north end of Red Rock Rd who know all their neighbors and have horses and land and beautiful views. That's a great neighborhood. You can't tell someone who lives in Gardnerville that there's a better place to live. I know several Sparks natives who wouldn't think of living anywhere else. I could go on!

The point here was to get people to tell me about their own great neighborhood. Not to piss and moan and feel all persecuted because someone who lives elsewhere might like where they live.

So get back on topic and tell me what you like about where you live.

C: Lots of us have been waxing poetic on Reno Baby! for a long time. If you dig back through the forums you'll see us singing the praises of local donut shops (except for the beef jerky & Josef's contingents) and going on for pages about what makes Reno so unique.

Ummmm - so now a FEW of us are getting more into food fight mode.

I'm not going to say my 'hood is better, but I'll say that I certainly love it. Except for all the people on bikes that ride by and drink all my beer and vodka and whisky. That's getting expensive.

While our 'hood may be just average, our 'chicks cruising on bikes' ratio is pretty dang enviable.

Fun topic... I'll try to make this very brief, key word being, "try".

My wife and I have planned on buying a new house for about two years, and have spent many a weekend cruising through various neighborhoods from the south (Damonte Ranch) to the west (Somersett) of Reno and everywhere in between. Here's a few of our favorite neighborhoods (most of which we cannot actually afford, but whatever):

- Lake Stanely (S. McCarran, go left on Greensboro) Yup, there's a lake in Reno... I had no idea until about 2 years ago. Lot's of green area with massive trees.
- Lower Caughlin Ranch... Beautiful, makes me forget that I live in a desert. ;-)
- Newlands Circle and old south reno along California/Arlington
- Manzanita, from Plumas to upper Dant. Love this street!
- Dartmouth Dr. another hidden Lake inside of Plumb Ave.
- South Reno, from Lakeside to Huffaker to Holcomb... nice old ranch lands
- Dant, Pioneer, lower Skyline, Rancho Manor, Greenridge Dr. circle, upper Caughlin Ranch

There's a pile more, but I'm out of time for now.

Ironically, I'm in the midst of buying a house in Somersett. Go figure. Anyone have anything to add about that area?

Other than you could be swallowed whole by the earth, no.

Ha! Actually, I grew up in an area of constant seismic activity... so I like a little shakin' now and then.
