Reno Baby!

People who dig Reno, Nevada - join us!

So some of you know about the issue some of us have with new media groups such as the Nevada New Media thing, and some of us have already weighed in on it. The issue is fairly simple to me. If your goal is to coalesce a movement around new media, social media and online communities in nevada, wouldn't you start here in this forum? Wouldn't you engage the local bloggers? wouldn't you consult with the experts who already have a forum up, running and vibrant?

Having attended the New Media Expo in Las Vegas last August I can tell you that the only good presentations were the ones which focused on person experience, stories, creativity and craft. The ones that dealt with tactics, strategy, and tools were boring, salesy and lame. That's what i see is missing from most new media, social media groups, blogs, videos, podcasts and what not i come across. You learn more by doing and paying attention to what others are doing well.

Okay, I too have been reading all of this and have stayed out of it for two reasons.
1) It wasn't discussed in an area I felt "invited to" (like this one)
2) I have no idea what is even being discussed and why people are getting so excited over it.

I am reading Guy Kawasaki's latest book and in it he gives me a thought about this subject.;

An executive summary would be useful and it shouldn't be more than two pages. Then give it to your potential users and see if they understand it. Better yet, how many Twitter pages would it take to explain it?

This conversation reminds me why I would never have the developers of any software or the designer of any computer write the manual on how to use it. They are too close to it and assume that everone already knows what a 64kRAM EPPROM is.

Thanks Dave,

"It wasn't discussed in an area I felt "invited to" (like this one)"

That's an extremely good point, and I'm really glad that you made it.

I over clocked my 64k Epprom by uncoupling the heisenberg compensators. I think everyone knows how to do that in this day and age.

Of course by even LOOKING at the Heisenberg compensator, you changed its very function in time-space.

I don't mind tinkering with my Holtzmann drive, but I steer clear of the Heisenberg compensator.

OMG - how did we get so far afield?

What are you talking about. Social media could be called the society for creative non-sequitur...

We could talk about inverse reactive current and unilateral phase detractors all day, or you could watch this video:

I think we've scared Dave Aiazzi off again ...

No, you haven't scared me off. You haven't answered me either. Which leads me to think that maybe the posters don't know themselves what they're posting about. [place appropriate emoticon here]

What was your question? I fail to see one other than how to explain Twitter.
What's this all about and why are people so excited??

(Dave's earlier "question"----without the question mark)

The complaint/discussion seems focused on the manner of creating this upcoming (in March) Nevada New Media summit, where the organizers have failed to touch base with the many online/blogger/etc persons active in local "new media". They're excited because they find ivory towers ugly.
Dave, in a nutshell you can relate to, I think it's about who gets to wear the "Nevada New Media" tiara. ;-)
I fully understand that there are arguments over what shape the table should be in for the peace talks "Nevada New Media summit. But for the life of me I can't seem to find a twitdef of "New Media". I just would like to know what all the fuss is about besides the organization. Why should I care if I don't have a grasp of "new media"?

Sure, I'll do as much research as the next guy (i.e. Wikipedia). Here's there top line "This article is in need of attention from an expert on the subject. WikiProject Technology or the Technology Portal may be able to help recruit one. (November 2008)"

I say the first person that could explain to their parents (me) in 140 characters what New Media is, will be crowned "Ruler of New Media" ( I have had the crown)
