Reno Baby!

People who dig Reno, Nevada - join us!

Like half the members on Reno Baby!, I work in marketing and we are talking at work about a project that taps into the "real Reno" - you know, the Reno that is so hard to describe to people ... how we reside somewhere in the cultural space between San Francisco, Boulder and Tuscaloosa.
We want to chronicle the attributes of our city that make us who we are, and the people who make those attributes what they are. I'm not talking Artown and Hot August Nights -- not the polished stuff. I'm talking the Awful Awful, the 50 tattoo parlors in a three-block radius dowtown, and the Mad Max Skater guy who harasses motorists on Moana and Virginia.
Who/what would you nominate?

Wow. It's almost like local TV is looking for ways to disconnect with the audience.

When I worked in newspapers we used to have meetings about that -- "How can we disconnect with the audience?" They were usually held after our Internet meetings -- "The Internet: A passing fad."

Maybe TV and Newspapers aren't all that different after all.

Now they're having meetings about how social networking is a passing fad.

tru dat.

I'd like to sit in on the RGJ meetings where the discuss ways to keep people from reading archived articles by saturating the internet with dead links. Bug we're taking this thread in the wrong direction...

Anyone catch a snapper of Chesty McCougarhunter yet?

although he's long gone from these parts, i miss seeing pro-life andy anderson around town. i don't agree with him, but he was one of those local color type people that EVERYONE knew. the same with Mrs. Wally: i was always happy to walk into deux gros nez and see her there. and speaking of deux gros nez, tim helion! he has always been a passionate reno-ite, and he has that "march to your own drum" spirit down pat. others have mentioned the waver, and i'll add my "yes" to that list.

ALL TV is hopelessly disconnected with audiences and they're gasping for air. We are not ONE MARKET and we like a multitudes of things, not just millionaire weddings and celebrity sexploits. The internet is a passing fad––it will pass once human kind 'passes'. It's here to stay and "TV" is not–not in the sense we know of it right now.

I'm on the last chapter of a book called "Gonzo Marketing" which talks about large corporations "not getting it"; they're still trying to market to people through Mass Marketing means-target audiences, what not, but the internet goes from bottom-up, advertising wise, because ON HERE, we don't need not stinkin' disruptive ads YELLING AT US! The trickle-down marketing system smells like piss. Micromarkets-just like here––common interests is what it's all about on the net.
